DJO
By Laura Henno – 2018

In the Highlands of Mayotte, a space of secrecy, magic, and escape, men and dogs share a filial, almost fusion-like bond, a companionship between species that share the same territory of transformation and autonomy. Smogi has a special relationship with dogs, but also with the power of the elements, nature, and the mischievous spirits that inhabit it (the djinns). Djo encounters different belief systems in a wild syncretism, where the call to Muslim prayer also marks the moment of reunion with the animist and impure forces of the forest.

Mauricette Bonnarien works as a longshorewoman at the port in French Guiana. The rest of the time, she performs slam poetry. It is time to make her new surname heard by those around her.
